    Default Upgrade Time!!

    So...

    8800GTX
    Q6600
    6GB Corsair XMS RAM
    ABiT IP35-E mobo
    X-Fi xtreme gamer
    Zalman 600W PSU

That is my current setup. Looking to keep some of my parts, but dont know what the good stuff would be.

Budget ~ 1k less is better of course, but if i can spend a little more for something that will last longer i will. I am guessing a good soundcard will go a long way.

I'd go for an i7 + mobo and a new GPU instead.

Why switch to i7? And what i7 is worth switching to? And what mobo would support i7? Is the Q6600 that much slower?

Would the power supply still be enough? what about switching to ddr3...

This doesnt need to be a bleeding edge machine, but id rather not replace everything in it...seems like a waste of decent parts

For gaming, no game so far has loaded my Q6600 completely, and neither has it loaded up my i7. However, if you do anything else like video encoding, calculations, large ammounts of code compiling etc, i7 will really shine. My 2c.

i would upgrade gpu and water cool the 6600. i have the 6600 at the stock 2.4GHz since its on my htpc, but many take this up to 3.6 easily. check up on it.
also SSD i guess would really make it feel faster.

Only ripping movies. But I am ok with that taking a while, I just throw it in at night and pull it out on the way to work. So I guess ill just drop a new vid card in for now and do a whole rework on the next upgrade.

Now i just need specific vid card recommendations. It seems each side is dropping a new card every week =|

    I'm an nVidia fanboy, I'd go for a 285GTX and I only suggest the i7 because Newegg.com - Intel Core i7-860 Lynnfield 2.8GHz 8MB L3 Cache LGA 1156 95W Quad-Core Processor - Processors - Desktops that's a damn good price.

Wait until the nVidia 100 series cards are released before you go for an upgrade. They will either have a budget option like the 5770 for ATi or the 280 series will drop in price.
